Last night marked the return of the Champions League group and it was eventful, to say the least. While Young Boys pulled off an upset on Manchester United, Chelsea managed to defeat Zenit in a tight contest. Juventus breezed past Swedish side Malmo 3-0.
The headline, however, was Bayern Munich’s 3-0 drubbing of Barcelona. Bayern were as good and Barca as woeful as their infamous 8-2 encounter but the scoreline was kinder to the Catalonian club. Barcelona have been in shambles for a while now and this defeat further accentuated their problems.

The Camp Nou crowd can be very vocal and does not hold back on its feelings. Sergi Roberto was on the end of the crowd’s hostility as he was whistled by the crowd when he was subbed off for Yusuf Demir. Club captain Gerard Pique was visibly upset on seeing the crowd’s treatment of Roberto. Speaking to Marca, he said, “The whistles hurt me a lot personally because I know the person, he is a spectacular human being and he loves this club more than anything.”
Pique further went on to explain how Sergi is playing out of his natural position and thus is having a hard time adapting. “I would like to remind people that he is not a winger. He makes the sacrifice to play in that position. It hurts a lot, people are free to express themselves, but if you ask me it hurts a lot.”

Talking about his team’s performance, Pique accepted that it wasn’t up to the mark. “Playing at home, it is a bad result, we are not going to fool ourselves. But if you look at the game, I think that in the first half we have competed, they have gone ahead with a deflected goal.
Despite the poor result, Pique highlighted the positives. The CB added that they fielded a very young side, missed key attackers, and asked fans to stay positive. “In the end, I don’t know how many 18-year-olds we had on and the team has competed and has shown their face. Now we are who we are, we are what we are, but I am convinced that as we recover players, we will end up competing. We have people like Ansu, like Ousmane, like Kun … now we are not favorites, but football changes very fast, last season nobody saw Chelsea as favorites.”
