The Spanish league was once the greatest league in the world, with teams like Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid dominating the European stage. Even Sevilla had their moment when they won three UEFA Europa League titles in a row. However, they are still on that level.

FC Barcelona, on the other hand, are sadly not. Surrounded by controversies in recent years, things have gone very wrong for them financially. Players like Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets have taken massive pay cuts to help finance new deals.

Gerard Pique speaks out against the Spanish media

However, the crisis has been made to look much worse than it is by the Spanish media if Gerard Pique is to be believed. The Spanish defender harbors dreams of being the club president after he retires and seems like a great candidate for the job. He has criticized the media several times and talked about it with Ibai Llanos. He accused the media of being biased and said that it’s all about “being friends” with the right people in the media.

If you knew about how the press works in Spain… you see, you understand everything. It’s all about friends. Let’s say this player or that manager has a friend in the press… they don’t get criticised. You see opinion articles defending them,” Pique said.

He later went on to say that if he became the Barcelona president, he wouldn’t let the toxicity around the club exist. “If I were president of Barça, I would tell the entire toxic entourage to f*** off,” he added.

Last month, Spanish journalist Lluis Canut claimed that Pique earned €28 million (£23.4 million) per year. However, the Spanish center-back was quick to respond on Twitter and reveal that the claim was false by all accounts.
