The days have gotten from bad to worse for Ronald Koeman at FC Barcelona as the Dutch manager lost the El Clasico to Real Madrid at Camp Nou. However, it’s Barcelona’s form in Europe that is more worrying because the club is in danger of not progressing through to the knockout stages.

Barcelona is third in their UCL group with three points from three matches. Their win against Dynamo Kyiv has given them some hopes, but losses to Bayern Munich and S.L. Benfica have left the club with a lot to think about.

The 3-0 defeat to Benfica was particularly damaging since Koeman’s team is supposed to be the stronger team on paper. According to Catalunya Radio, if Barcelona fail to qualify for the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League, Ronald Koeman will be sacked.

While some fans wanted Koeman gone after Barcelona’s loss in the Clasico, there’s a massive shortage of good managers right now, and no obvious replacements are available.

FC Barcelona lose their fourth El Clasico in a row

The Clasico loss wasn’t something new for the club as Barcelona have lost their last four games against Real Madrid. Their last win came in March 2019, when they still had Lionel Messi in their ranks.

This time around, Barcelona started well, and Sergino Dest came close to scoring before David Alaba finished a Real Madrid counter-attack in the 32nd minute. Madrid controlled the game well and defended astutely before scoring again in the 94th minute. Sergio Aguero did get a late consolation, but it wasn’t enough in the end.

Barca’s form in the league is disappointing as well. The club has won only four of its first nine matches. Three draws and two defeats have left them six points behind table-toppers Real Sociedad, but they do have a game in hand.

It’ll be interesting to see whether Ronald Koeman can rally his players around to string together a few results, because the circumstances are dire for both the club and the manager now.
