It is no secret, England has one of the strongest sides in men’s football. However, things are no different with their women’s national team either. The Lionesses recently beat Latvia with a horrifying scoreline of 20-0. This caused a huge debate among the fans, with some questioning their fair play and integrity and a few others trolling the victims of this bashing.

Notably, this is the biggest win in football recorded by any England side, and a thrashing like that will surely go down in history. England’s team was drawn against Latvia in the FIFA Women’s world cup qualifiers in group D. Scoring 53 goals and conceding none throughout, they dominated all six of their matches in the group.

What do the fans think about the game between Latvia and England?

Leaving fans in splits, a Twitter user suggested that FIFA introduce knockouts, similar to boxing, in football. He stated that a score of 6-0 after 23 minutes was comparable to a knockout in boxing and the match referee could actually stop and ask the opponent if they wanted to continue the game or not.

Notably, some Twitter users also talked about the lack of investment made by the Latvian government in their women’s national team. They believe the problem lies in the organization and not in the team, who wore their heart on their sleeve and competed with utmost grit and determination.

Some even hailed praise for the Latvian team for their sheer display of character. Despite the score, the women didn’t quit and tried their hardest, despite the clear lack of quality between the two teams.

Are games like these good for women’s football?

There was also a lot of talk about women’s football not being competitive anymore, and some people speculated whether the game between Latvia and England raised the profile of women’s football. Mick Thompson, a Twitter user, said, “That England v Latvia result last night does nothing to raise the profile of women’s football, quite the opposite, in my opinion. There also seems to be a huge imbalance between some clubs in the English league.”

Another user named Matt agreed with Mick’s points and added that it wasn’t a good promotion for women’s football. Latvia had changed their goalkeepers after the score reached 8-0, but the substitute goalkeeper further conceded 12 goals, dampening any hopes of a revival.
