David Beckham was one of the best footballers during his time at the top level. He played for huge clubs like Real Madrid and Manchester United and won every trophy that there was. However, he was also one of the first big names that Paris Saint Germain acquired since their inception.
Beckham joined PSG in 2013 after spending five years at LA Galaxy in MLS and only played 10 games for the French club. He then retired from football and left behind a legacy that would be hard for any footballer to follow in the next few years.

David Beckham explains why he played for free at PSG
Beckham’s move to PSG wasn’t a normal transfer in any facet, as the Englishman played for the Parisian club for free. He donated his salary to charity and revealed why he did that in a 2013 interview with Sky Sports. Beckham said that he never played football for money.
The Englishman had played for three of the biggest clubs in the world of football (he also played for AC Milan for two years) and had earned a lot of money during the course of his career. Beckham recognized that in the interview and added that any charity would benefit a lot from the seven-figure donation.
“I love doing things for charity, I’ve always tried to do as much as possible for charity and when this idea came up, I just felt it was the right thing to do. I felt it was a special thing to do, to be able to help a charity benefit from a pretty decent amount of money,” he said.

In the interview, he also talked about the fact that something like this had never been done before. PSG was happy with the decision, and he didn’t join them for the money. Beckham also added that he wants people to realize that football was much more important than money or fame.
“It was a good thing to do. I don’t think it’s been done before. The club was more than happy with it…. This move for me is about football, it’s not about money…. I want people to realise that football is more important than anything else… apart from my family,” the Englishman added.
