Manchester United are going through one of the most unsuccessful stretches in the club’s history. Despite re-signing club legend, Cristiano Ronaldo, the club will now go through one more season without a trophy.
It has been five years since United won anything, and the last time they won the league was in 2013, when Sir Alex Ferguson was still in charge. As a result, there’s no other fanbase in the world that is more irritated and angry with its club, and rightly so.
United was knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by Atletico Madrid yesterday, with Renan Lodi’s goal sealing the tie after a draw in the first leg. However, things can never be straightforward when a player of Ronaldo’s stature is involved.

Cristiano Ronaldo shows his anger towards the referee
The tie featured a lot of controversial refereeing decisions, as there was a case to be made for Atletico’s goal to be ruled out. United’s players argued that there was a foul committed on Anthony Elanga by the Spanish club in the build-up to the goal.
However, the referee didn’t listen, and VAR agreed with him. Cristiano Ronaldo was left gesticulating at the referee as he went on to tell him that he needs glasses. The first half ended without much controversy after that, but things didn’t change in the second half.
The referee’s decisions didn’t go down well with the Manchester United faithful, and the second half couldn’t produce any goals. United fans expressed their frustrations at the final whistle as their hopes of winning a trophy were killed.

Manchester United and what’s left to play for this season
After their poor show in the UCL, United are only competing in the Premier League now. They were knocked out of the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup earlier in the season and a good finish in the league is their only hope remaining.
The club will desperately want to get a spot in the top 4 to save themselves from the embarrassment of not qualifying for the UCL next season. Not to forget, if they fail to qualify for the UCL next season, there is a possibility that Cristiano Ronaldo will leave the club.
