The Georgetown basketball fraternity was hit with a massive setback last morning. Tasha, who was suffering from breast cancer, died after battling her condition for two years. USWNT captain Alex Morgan joined the basketball community as she took to her social media to mourn the tragic loss. Morgan posted a story on Instagram with a picture reading, “In loving memory of Tasha Butts, 1982-2023.”

Despite not making it big as a player, Tasha had a decorated career as a coach. The ex-Minnesota Lynx player started off as a graduate assistant in 2005 for Tennessee. The player also had a small excursion in Israel and Portugal before returning to the WNBA to play for the Charlotte Sting and Houston Comets.

She joined her current team last year after being promoted to associate head coach at Georgia Tech. Butts took a break away from the game last month, leaving her responsibilities to interim head coach Darnell Haney. Georgetown, following the tragic passing of its head coach, will continue helping Butts’ cause, with Lee Reed issuing an emotional statement.

Tasha was a part of four twenty-win seasons while nurturing the likes of Raigyne Louis and Danielle Ballard. Under Tasha’s guidance, Ballard smashed the record for most steals (100) in a season by either men or women in 2013. Her second student Raigyne Louis was even better as she smashed Ballard’s existing record four seasons later with 107 steals to her name. A true veteran of the sport. RIP Tasha Butts.
