Angel City FC received a shock treatment on their NWSL opener as they were bested 1-0 by newcomers Bay FC. Not the performance you would associate with the league’s most valuable franchise. However, it must be said that Angel City is facing some injury issues. One player unavailable for the match was Jun Endo, and it seems the club owner Alexis Ohanian wants to see the ‘awesome‘ star back on the pitch as soon as possible.

Endo was at BMO Stadium to support her teammates in their season opener. The forward also removed time for her fans as she posed with a little girl while on crutches. The child’s father uploaded the picture on social media while thanking Alexis Ohanian for the ‘amazing experience‘. This came to the attention of Ohanian, the partner of 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams.

Through his Instagram story, he thanked Jun Endo for the kind gesture. The caption read, “Jun Endo is so awesome-heal up!-thanks for always taking care of your fans!“. Unfortunately for fans, Jun Endo won’t be on the pitch anytime soon as she is out for the season with an ACL injury. With 4 goals and 6 assists in 40-plus games, Endo leaves a creative void that will be hard to fill. Unfortunately for Angel City FC, the problems are not just limited to the pitch as the club faces an ownership squabble.

Amid ownership tensions, Angel City FC is on the lookout for a new investor

Angel City FC is valued at $180 million, per Sportico, about 3 times of an average NWSL team. Last season, they splurged more than any other team in the division on transfers. Normally, this paints the picture of a healthy ownership structure. But, at Angel City, this excessive overspending is why Alexis Ohanian is unhappy as the club is not profitable.

Furthermore, Ohanian, despite being the club’s first investor and owning the majority stakes, doesn’t have the last word in financial matters. He shares it with the club’s other owners, including Natalie Portman, Julie Urham, and Kara Nortman. Hence, Ohanian’s displeasure has seemingly resulted in an ownership rift and the club has hired New York-based investment bank, Moelis & Co. in their quest to seek a new investor who can take control.

Per Sara Harden, one of the club’s early investors, this is not a move aimed at selling the club. Rather, she views this as ‘fundraising.’ She added, “Angel City is exactly where it needs to be as a club. In high-growth companies, it is absolutely normal to step back and look at ‘What do we need to continue this growth?.'” Amidst all of this, Alexis Ohanian has made it clear that he will not be selling his equity.
