The 2023 edition of the National Women’s Super League is finally underway. The fans were waiting for this day ever since the NWSL drafts in January. One of the most exciting teams to watch from last season was Angel City FC. The LA-based soccer team picked up the teenage soccer sensation, Alyssa Thompson, at the 2023 NWSL draft. It’s safe to say that every fan was waiting to watch her perform in Angel City FC colors.

At halftime, Angel City FC’s co-founder, Alexis Ohanian attempted to pump up the fans through an Instagram story. However, the club’s dream NWSL opener came to a tragic end after Kevin Durant’s NJ / NY Gotham FC came from behind and won the game 2-1.

Every fan was excited about this fixture. But the common feeling was that Angel City FC will start their season on a high. After such a worthy display during a friendly game against Club America, the fans were expecting a better show for sure. The BMO stadium was sold out with 22,000 fans present to watch the game live.

Serena Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian, was also present for the match. The American entrepreneur co-founded the LA-based soccer club along with other big names like Jennifer Garner, Eva Longoria, and many more. Seemingly during halftime, Ohanian pulled out his phone and recorded a heartfelt message on Instagram for the soccer club’s fans.

He said, “Ohh, we’re back! Alyssa Thompson already scored one goal. Not a fluke, not a fluke y’all”. Angel City FC was leading during halftime. The iconic Alyssa Thompson gave her side an early lead against NJ/NY Gotham FC. However, the LA-based women’s soccer club couldn’t hold on to their narrow lead. They ended up losing the game 2-1.

Despite the disappointing display on the inaugural day of the season, everyone in the Angel City FC camp was appreciating Alyssa Thompson.

The 18-year-old American soccer sensation had a fine game. She gave her team an early lead in the 11 minute itself. She scored an absolute banger after cutting in from the left wing. It’s safe to say that the teenager played her part despite her team’s tragic loss. After the game, quite a few individuals at the club had nothing but appreciation for Thompson.

Angel City FC’s head coach, Freya Coombe said, “She was an absolute handful down that left-hand side. Being able to face up, being able to go at defenders, she causes some problems. And I think that’s going to be a problem that she continues to pose for the opposition”, as transcribed by LA Times. After the defensive collapse against Durant’s NJ / NY Gotham FC, the LA-based soccer club will now face Marta’s Orlando Pride next weekend.
