The fan following at Wrexham AFC has no bounds. Earlier, an NFL Super Bowl-winning coach relocated with his family from Florida to the city of Wrexham on the occasion of the New Year. That said, this story caught the eye of one of the Red Dragons’ co-owners and the best friend of Ryan Reynolds, who quickly fired a five-word response.
Paul McCord was mesmerized by the Welsh-based club as he said, “We’ve fallen in love with the place and the people. In a world that can be very cynical, to have a place that’s authentic and full of gratitude makes you want to be here. That’s what drew us back.” In response to the same, Rob McElhenney said, “Me too coach. Me too,”. That begs the question, how did the love for Wrexham begin for McCord and his family?

Paul McCord is a former NFL coach who led the Baltimore Ravens to Super Bowl glory in 2001. His wife, Mindy, also happens to be a successful women’s lacrosse coach at the University of South Florida. Both recently had a chat with The Athletic and discussed their ultimate passion for Wrexham. The couple agreed that it all started with ‘Welcome to Wrexham,’ a documentary that both of them could relate to. The McCords were also impressed with the locals.
The first match they went to watch was against Southend United in March 2023. Unfortunately, Paul purchased his tickets in the section intended for the away team’s supporters. Luckily, they were taken to a different area of the stand, where all the players from the reserve squad were seated. “The funny thing is we got on season two of the documentary as a result. We were watching at home when suddenly, there we were, on the screen, looking like total tourists in our Wrexham hats and scarves, sitting with all these players!” said Mindy.

Paul McCord wants to ‘educate people in Tampa’ about Wrexham
Apart from writing a book about sports underdogs and helping Mindy on her coaching path, Paul hopes to further spread ‘Wrexham’ in 2024. “Family and friends all know about Wrexham. For our daughter Taylor and son-in-law Spencer (Zapper), we bought Wrexham shirts for Christmas. The plan now is to educate people in Tampa about this great club,” said Paul.

Paul further hilariously acknowledged that he neither followed Ryan Reynolds nor Rob McElhenney. Instead, it was the ‘sport element,’ especially the ‘underdog story,’ that drew him towards the club. The ex-NFL coach further revealed that he and his family are accustomed to ‘shouting so loud,’ that even neighbors know that the Red Dragons have scored. Indeed, a unique story from another ardent duo of Wrexham supporters.
