NFL superstar Patrick Mahomes‘ Kansas City Chiefs just won the Best Team award at ESPN’s ESPY Awards. At the same stage, the two-time Super Bowl champion won the Best Athlete in Men’s Sports award. Amid chasing back-to-back glory, the Super Bowl MVP’s recent Kansas City outing has turned heads in the soccer world. Mahomes and his wife Brittany, saved some time to have a look at the NWSL side, Kansas City Current’s soccer masterpiece.

The KC Current stadium’s construction is live and running at Berkley Riverfront Park. Kansas City superstar Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Mahomes seem to have toured the mega project. Meanwhile, Tennis legend Serena Williams‘ husband Alexis Ohanian was quick to acknowledge the star couple’s outing.

Patrick and Brittany Mahomes check out a $117 million soccer project

For quite some time, NWSL’s Kansas City Current has been playing their home matches at Children’s Mercy Park, which is home to the MLS side, Sporting Kansas City. However, in 2020, the women’s soccer team decided to have a stadium for themselves and started to construct the KC Current Stadium at Berkley Riverfront Park. Initially, the project had a proposed seating capacity of 6,000 seats. Later on, the capacity went to 11,000 and then to 11,500 seats. For the same cause, the team’s front office will splurge a whopping $117 million.

Upon opening in March 2024, KC Current Stadium will be the first stadium in the US that is built for women’s sports. Given the venture’s influence on the sporting community in Kansas City, Patrick Mahomes did not shy away from visiting the landmark project. National Women’s Soccer League’s Instagram handle has posted the pictures from Mahomes’ and Brittany’s visit to the KC Current stadium. Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian was quick to notice NWSL’s post, and he liked the set of pictures, giving a seal of approval.

Interestingly, Mahomes’ visit to KC Current’s stadium, does not go come as a surprise. Expanding his sporting empire, Mahomes joined KC Current as a part owner in January, this year. Moreover, he and Brittany had celebrated the recent Mother’s Day while attending a Kansas City Current game. Anyhow, similar to KC’s NWSL side, some other NWSL teams have also attracted sports icons and celebrities alike.

NWSL side that brought a bunch of A-listers together

In 2020, LA, the home of the Lakers and the LA Galaxy announced a women’s soccer club. In 2022, the club debuted in NWSL as the Angel City FC. The franchise is backed by superstars such as Natalie Portman and Eva Longoria, tennis legend Serena Williams, WNBA superstar Candace Parker and UWSNT soccer stars Mia Hamm and Abby Wambach.

In addition to this lineup of? sporting icons, Serena Williams’ husband and venture capitalist Alexis Ohanian is also backing the LA-based soccer club. Additionally, he represents the club in NWSL’s board of governors. Spreading a smile across the soccer fandom in the US, the NWSL is scaling new heights and bringing in sports legends and cultural icons under the league’s umbrella.
