The weekend MLS fixture between Inter Miami and Sporting Kansas City was no less than a dramatic movie. The Herons successfully managed to bounce back from their CONCACAF Champions League upset by clinching an emphatic 2-3 victory at Arrowhead Stadium against the Patrick Mahomes-owned side. But what remains the headline of the match is a goal scored by none other than Lionel Messi. While La Pulga’s goal tally for Miami keeps on increasing, it brings up the question of whether he is finally close to becoming the club’s top scorer.
The highest goalscorer in the history of Inter Miami remains Messi’s former Argentinian teammate, Gonzalo Higuain. Even though the former Juventus star hung up his boots, he tops the chart with a tally of 29 goals. Behind Higuain trails Leonardo Campana with just four goals, as the youngster takes second place with 25 goals. Interestingly, Messi, on the other hand, takes third place with 18 goals. This means that the World Cup winner is not too far away from taking the top spot. In fact, with the rate at which the former Barcelona man is firing goals, there’s no doubt that he will make history in no time.
Messi would need 7 goals to take Campana’s throne. Adding four more will make him level with Higuain. Notably, the ex-PSG star has netted 7 goals so far for the Florida-based side this season. Meanwhile, in his debut season for the David Beckham-owned club, Messi impressively bagged over 11 goals in a short span of time. Given that the current campaign is in its initial stages, the Argentinian has many games to clinch the number. Keeping up with today’s performance for future games, well, that also goes without saying. Speaking of which, how did even Miami manage to stun Mahomes and Sporting KC?

Lionel Messi and Inter Miami leave Patrick Mahomes and Sporting Kansas City speechless at Arrowhead Stadium
Inter Miami shockingly stumbled within six minutes against Sporting Kansas City, with Erik Thommy breaking the deadlock. However, their lead didn’t last long as Lionel Messi brilliantly set up Diego Gomez for Miami’s equalizer. The first half ended with both sides on equal terms. Interestingly, 10 minutes after the second half began, Messi scored a screamer from way outside the box to give Miami a lead.
But Kansas quickly spoiled skipper’s efforts as Thommy completed his brace to level the score. As if the drama so far wasn’t enough, Luis Suarez rewrote the script of the game with his match-winning strike, thanks to an assist from Diego Gomez. Interestingly, Miami’s front three got their names on the scoresheet to give Tata Martino and Co. a respite from the poor form.
Certainly, if similar performances are being displayed by Inter Miami, then they can make up for their CONCACAF Champions Cup exit with the MLS Cup. As for Messi, he can also etch his name in the history books.
