Historic would be an understatement to describe Lionel Messi sharing a warm hug with Patrick Mahomes before the Sporting KC-Inter Miami game last Saturday. On the other hand, Mahomes would definitely have wanted the KC-Miami game to end differently. The Herons came from behind to oust the Mahomes-co-owned KC side 2-3 in front of a raucous home crowd. Nevertheless, the 3x Super Bowl champion now feels lucky to have witnessed the Miami skipper Messi’s masterclass from the stands. In his most recent presser, the KC Chiefs QB spoke of the Argentine leaving him speechless with a heroic display.

Patrick Mahomes’ press conference is now doing rounds on the web, thanks to the Kansas City Chiefs’s YouTube channel. During the presser, the 2024 Super Bowl champion shared the experience of watching Lionel Messi tear into Sporting KC’s defense. “As far as Messi, I mean just it’s awesome man. To see the guy at the top of any league in the entire world. You saw certain spots he had he wasn’t marked. And when he got free he made stuff happen with the pass that he made, with the vision he had. Then the goal that he scored. It shows you what it is like to be at the top of the top playing in any profession,” said Mahomes.

Inter Miami had not won any of their five last games before meeting Sporting KC at the Arrowhead Stadium. While it looked like the losing streak was here to stay with the Herons when KC’s Erik Thommy scored in the sixth minute, Lionel Messi started engineering a comeback in the 18th minute. He set up Diego Gomez with a high-IQ pass from midfield that easily penetrated KC’s midfield. Later, in the 51st minute, in what looked like a shot from the galaxy, Leo Messi’s left foot sent a screamer to the net from outside the box. Though KC’s Thommy equalized later, Luis Suarez ensured Miami’s win with a 71st-minute strike. Now, Messi’s Miami side tops the MLS table in the East with two more games in April to go. But how are things looking for the star-studded team?

What next for Lionel Messi and Inter Miami?

Inter Miami next plays Nashville SC on Saturday with a good six-day break after the Sporting KC game. With Lionel Messi performing at his peak in Kansas City and having sufficient days to rest, he is expected to start for the Herons on Saturday. Messi’s display against the Mahomes-co-owned side showed how important it is for Miami to have him fit and game-ready. Miami notably met with losses and draws when injury woes haunted Leo Messi. The Herons and Nashville last met in the CONCACAF Champions Cup Ro16, where Messi and Co. won.

After the Nashville tie, Inter Miami will hit the Gillette Stadium to take on the New England Revolution. Messi’s side cannot afford to lose any of these ties, as they are currently the top seed in the East after beating Sporting KC. A loss could see the NY Red Bulls topple Miami’s top-seeded run, as the NY side and Messi’s club have currently drawn for points.
