Can the USMNT rise to Pochettino's standards, or are they destined to fall short again?

If you look at the last two decades of soccer, USWNT is one formidable team to beat. Winning 5 Olympic gold medals is a testament to their success. But if you switch your attention to the USMNT, it’s not the same at all. The men’s team is not playing how they need to. And with the imminent arrival of Mauricio Pochettino, the team looks ready to unleash themselves. In fact, one of their brightest prospects, Yunus Musah, prepares himself for the change in attitude.

According to a post on X by USMNT Otaku, Musah stated, “He’s a manager that’s worked with top players so he definitely has a lot of things he trusts. And then us as well obviously. We need to also take accountability. At the end of the day, we have a manager that comes in, we have to also push on.”

The USMNT team underachieved for several years now and needs to return to its best. The best finish for their country was a third-place finish in the 1930 World Cup, after getting placed there because of tournament records. But, the lack of team chemistry and cohesion hurt the team, failing to muster a proper semi-final or quarter-final berth, regularly.

Although Pochettino’s signature is not yet final, Musah and Co remain positive about appointing the former PSG coach. Musah continued, “Honestly, when I saw the news, it was nice to see that a manager like Pochettino, coached a lot of top teams, agreed to coach for us. I don’t think it’s official yet or whatever but if he becomes our manager, I feel like he’ll be able to help a lot.”

The manager will have several top players to work with and Musah is one of them. The AC Milan midfielder is an all-action midfielder who could do it all. Moreover, he was nominated for the Golden Boy Award in 2022 for showcasing his talents. He joined the Arsenal academy at a young age to earn recognition. After that, Valencia poached him to create a superstar for the ages.

By appearing in multiple games for Valencia, the USMNT midfielder attracted eyeballs and finally earned a move to AC Milan. With Christian Pulisic on the team, Musah aims to lead the USMNT forward. Although he has yet to win a major trophy, his coaching and tactics align with the USMNT.

He often plays counterattacking soccer with players pressing vigorously after they lose the ball. If you look at the current team of the USMNT, they have players who possess great physical attributes. When a fan watches them play in previous World Cups or major tournaments, one can point out the individual mistakes that dampen the team.

Thus, Musah wants more accountability from players and Pochettino could be the right man to lead them forward. If he can’t, the USMNT is in deep trouble. Do you think he can, though?
