Portugal is into the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup after beating Switzerland 6-1 in the R16. It was a massive win for the former European champions as they hope to bring the FIFA World Cup at home. Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo could win his 3rd silverware with the national team. He has already won the Euros and the Nations League. However, he reportedly threatened to leave the national team  when he didn’t start against Switzerland.

Cristiano Ronaldo started all three games for Portugal at the World Cup in the group stage. Portugal registered two wins from those three games and qualified for the knockouts. However, in the final game, Fernando Santos pulled him out of the game, which made the player unhappy. Later, Santos criticized Ronaldo for his gesture after substitution. In the next game, Ronaldo started on the bench.

Fernando Santos decided to put Ronaldo on the bench in the Round of 16 clash against Switzerland. Goncalo Ramos started his first game of the World Cup and ended up scoring a hat-trick. The decision to bench Ronaldo worked for Santos as they won 6-1. However, according to reports, Ronaldo threatened to leave the Portuguese camp after Santos’ bold decision against Switzerland.

According to a recent report from the Portuguese newspaper Record.pt, Ronaldo threatened to leave the World Cup. This came after Fernando Santos started Goncalo Ramos instead of Ronaldo against Switzerland.

Ronaldo was also reportedly spotted saying, “you’re in a f*****g hurry to take me away” to Fernando Santos after his substitution against South Korea.

This is a piece of massive news coming from the Portuguese national team came in Qatar. However, after the game, Santos clarified that the incident was past the team and they have moved forward from that. Earlier, Ronaldo’s girlfriend took to social media to question Santos’ decision to bench Ronaldo.

Portugal will next face high-flying Morocco in the quarter-finals. Morocco has conceded just one goal throughout the World Cup and has been the true dark horse in the competition.
