Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi? This matter, of deciding who’s the greater one, has been a subject of debate for fans and pundits over the years. Jermain Defoe believes that Lionel Messi surpasses Cristiano Ronaldo, primarily due to the inclusion of the World Cup in his trophy closest. The Barcelona icon netted seven goals in the entire tournament. Messi also played a pivotal role in his decisive late goal against France in the final game, following Argentina’s victory in the penalty shootout. Defoe acknowledged the remarkable stint from the PSG star in the World Cup, even during this twilight of his career.

The Tottenham legend remarked in an interview, “Obviously, Messi won a world cup, so it’s difficult to see past that. He won the World Cup and not only a World Cup, the way he performed in that World Cup when I can imagine the pressure well. The pressure was on because probably his last to do that, so to go out likely the way he has in terms of World Cup”.

On the other hand, Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t exhibit his scoring ability as he showcased in the previous editions of the World Cup. CR7 scored a single goal in the tournament, forcing him to sit out of Portugal’s games against Switzerland and Morocco. However, the 5x Ballon d’Or winner’s ‘GOAT’ case doesn’t hold the most strength after La Pulga’s global triumph.

We all know that the fans won’t stop the GOAT debate anytime soon. But has anyone ever asked the two icons how they feel about it? Luckily, a few months ago, Cristiano Ronaldo had a few eye-opening thoughts on the same. Let’s dive deeper.
