In a hilarious story from the new season of ‘Welcome To Wrexham’, owner Rob McElhenney tried to be a badass and circumnavigate a UK broadcast rule. The funny story comes from S02E04 of Wrexham‘s hit TV show released by the club’s Hollywood owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

In the episode, McElhenney narrates an incident involving ‘Article 48’ and what he did instead to bypass the rule. Article 48 basically states that 3 p.m. kickoffs in the UK cannot be broadcast on TV. However, Rob wants to break the rule and livestream the game. Here’s what happens.

According to the by-laws of British TV, a Saturday 3 p.m. kickoff can’t be broadcast in the UK. This rule was put in place in the 1960s to ensure fans attended the games in the stadiums, preventing a loss of ticket sales.

However, as depicted in the episode, Rob McElhenney illegally broadcasts the game for fans from the feed reserved for the club and its owners. Word quickly got out that McElhenney was going to broadcast the game all across Wales and that ended up being an equivalent of “showing both fingers” at the UK’s laws.

McElhenney narrates the entire sequence of events as he says, that fans in Europe might think he is a “typical American a**hole.” He found a “loophole” in Article 48 and further stated, “I just wanted to watch the game”.

Furthermore, the It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia actor was told by Wrexham executive Shaun Harvey that he could not broadcast the game saying “You cannot do this!” and that it was, in fact, “a big deal”. The scene then ends with Rob asking Wrexham fans what “two fingers” in the air means while calling Shaun, “scary”.

The funny anecdotes from the ‘Welcome To Wrexham’ TV series aside, it’s been an inconsistent run of results on the pitch for the Red Dragons.

Wrexham thrashed by Stockport as poor form continues despite Paul Mullin’s return

The Welsh club has been boosted by the return of their star striker Paul Mullin, whom they’ve affectionately dubbed “The Non-League Haaland”. But even Mullin’s return from injury couldn’t see Wrexham put together a good run of results.

Mullin returned for Wrexham against Doncaster Rovers, coming on as a substitute in the second half as Wrexham beat Doncaster 2-1. The Red Dragons then beat Grimsby Town 3-0 but were then trashed 5-0 by Stockport, a team lower than them, in 9th place, in the EFL League Two table.

Mullin has yet to score since his return to the Welsh club’s first team. Nevertheless, Wrexham is still 7th in the EFL League Two standings with 15 points in 9 games. They will surely look to improve their results in their bid to get promoted to EFL League One by the end of the season.
