Fresh off a grand Super Cup loss against Real Madrid, FC Barcelona faced Athletic Club in the Copa del Rey quarterfinals. Shockingly, Xavi and Co. were brushed away out with a 4-2 scoreline. This double blow comes while Xavi’s future at Camp Nou is already on dicey grounds. “If we are not at a competitive level at the end of the season, I will leave,” assured Xavi, after the Copa exit. However, the critics don’t seem to be waiting till the end of the season. A Spanish journalist close to CR7 said, “They [Barcelona] need another coach to shake the shaker.” Xavi’s future on the Catalan side was the talking point in the latest episode of the Spanish TV program, El Chiringuito.
Program Director and Cristiano Ronaldo’s close friend, Eduardo Aguirre asserted Xavi’s doom has dawned at Camp Nou. “It is time to assume that Xavi’s project is over…Today is the first day of the new Barca,” he said. Diving deeper, Aguirre continued that the Copa del Rey was Blaugrana’s closest chance to win a trophy this season. Now that they lost it, they only have a thin chance to defend their La Liga title and go all the way in the UEFA Champions League, he claimed. Anyhow, Aguirre being this critical of Barcelona is no surprise. Historically, he has never shied away from speaking his mind about the Catalan club and its personnel.

On the back of his friendship with Cristiano Ronaldo and his affiliation with Real Madrid, Edu Aguirre has gone ballistic at Lionel Messi, during his days at Barcelona. The TV host has also faced the music for the same reason. But this time he won’t face flak, as things have long gone out of kilter at Joan Laporta’s club under Xavi.

Barcelona got a glimmer of hope last year when Xavi led them to a Supercopa de Espana and La Liga title win. However, things did not pan out well for the 44-year-old boss. “We must be one of the worst teams in Europe in terms of effectiveness,” said the Barcelona boss, after the team settled for a draw against Valencia. Besides, Xavi was visibly frustrated with players when they failed to pass the ball like he did in his prime. Rumors also suggest that the club icon is losing the locker room, as players are increasingly critical of his decisions.

Elsewhere, in the UCL, he claimed a tainted record, with the highest loss percentage for any Blaugrana coach. The club stands 3rd in La Liga, 8 points shy of table toppers, Girona and 7 points shy of arch-rivals Real Madrid. Adding salt to these wounds was the Super Cup loss and the recent Copa del Rey exit.
