American soccer star Sophia Smith just created history. The USWNT striker became the first ever woman of color to win the U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year. The fans are also praising runner-up Jayden Shaw. Notably, Shaw made the ‘pro’ leap in 2022 after she signed for San Diego Wave F.C. Many praised her for the massive feat that summed up her 2022, including Alexis Ohanian, husband of Serena Williams.

Sophia Smith is receiving many heart-warming wishes on social media. Serena Williams’ husband, Ohanian, posted his appreciation too. Smith becomes the first black woman to win the award since its inception in 1985. This is truly an equally proud moment for her and the community as well.

This is not the first record Smith has broken. In 2022, she became the youngest player to lead scoring in the USWNT. She was also the youngest player to win the NWSL MVP award back in October.

While the entire soccer fanbase is delighted at this achievement, Ohanian has stepped in too. He replied to the announcement of the award that ‘The Athletic’ posted. Ohanian’s three-worded reply caught the public eye too.

Ohanian wrote, “Iconic shrug tbh”. These three words were basically describing Smith’s nonchalant reaction in the picture. Fans took an immediate liking to Ohanian’s comment. One of them wrote, “would love to see that shrug in an @weareangelcity jersey”.

Sophia Smith “super humbled” after winning the POTY

Whilst receiving all the praises from soccer fans, Smith also spoke about how she felt after winning this prestigious award. Smith admitted that she was “super humbled”.

She told CBS Sports, “It’s been a very exciting year, and certainly there’s been some challenges, but just being able to grow and develop in the environments with the National Team and the Thorns, and being surround by such amazing players, players that I have looked up to for so long, has pushed me to become a better player and person”.

Over the years, Sophia Smith became the 19 different soccer player to win the POTY. Last year, Smith became the fifth youngest USWNT player to score a hat trick.

Smith concluded her experience by saying, “This award wouldn’t be possible without all those people, and the best thing about it, is that it’s fun too. The journey is so much better when you are doing something so fun and something you love”.

The 22-year-old soccer star has already achieved things that many players take a lifetime to achieve. Smith has always portrayed a never give up attitude. The soccer star is set to miss the USWNT training camp this January due to an injury. However, she’s expected to be fit for the upcoming 2023 FIFA World Cup.
