When Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over Wrexham, they decided to document the entire journey, resulting in the series ‘Welcome to Wrexham’. Initially, there were doubts about it being just another Hollywood stunt, but the series has since been renewed for a fourth season and has won multiple awards. It seems the success of the show was enough of a ‘welcome’ opportunity for Lionel Messi to try his hand at his own series.

Lionel Messi’s kids’ series, titled Messi and the Giants, was reported to be in production back in 2023. It will be premiering on Disney+, the same platform that hosts the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ series. Disney will be hoping that the new series can replicate the same level of success, having already made over $3.2 million. A launch date will be announced in the future.

About his new series, the Argentine says “I always dreamed of being involved in a project that would share the values of sports, the very same values that have been so important to my career, with younger generations,” Looking at his career path, from his days at La Masia to now playing for Inter Miami, Lionel Messi is truly an inspiration!

Sony Pictures Television will be producing the series which follows the life of Leo, a 12-year-old boy who is tasked with saving 10 realms from giant villains. The only problem is that he’s the size of a flea when compared to them. Speaking of 12-year-olds, a special Wrexham supporter recently found that he’s not the only fan of the popular docu-series.

What’s your perspective on:

Can Messi's new series inspire kids as much as his legendary career has inspired fans worldwide?

Archie’s mum, Sarah, revealed that Virgil Van Dijk was a fan of the Welcome to Wrexham series, when the skipper visited his room, which was a proud display of his loyalty to the North Welsh Club, with flags and shirts decorating the space all around him. “He made a couple (of) videos with Virgil, who was fab! He said he loved the Welcome to Wrexham doc and the other players were trying so hard to persuade Archie to be one of their reds!” Sarah told TL.

Archie who is battling with myeloid sarcoma was also visited by Wrexham’s star striker Ollie Palmer last month. These moments go to show that football is more than just a sport. With Messi’s new series coming soon, we can only wonder how many young hearts will be captivated by the Argentine—if they haven’t already.
