Despite manager Phil Parkinson publicly clamoring for signings, the incomings at Wrexham remain a grand zero! But, it seems like things could be about to pick up pace soon. In what could be a statement transfer, the Red Dragons have been linked with a sensation swoop for Gareth Bale’s former teammate. Is this the master transfer plan Ryan Reynolds and Co have been working on? Let’s dive into the details.

As per a report compiled by Neil Allen, Wrexham admires Joe Morrell, a player from League One side Portsmouth. Notably, the signing wouldn’t cost a dime, as the Welsh star will arrive as a free agent. Although the Pompeys were keen to extend his contract, they have failed to achieve a breakthrough.

Having played in FIFA World Cup 2022, Joe Morell has been an integral player for Portsmouth. Since arriving in 2021, the midfielder has played 105 games for the League One side scoring once. He was a crucial presence in Portsmouth’s title-winning campaign before an unfortunate knee injury in January. Consequently, his stocks have dipped at Portsmouth and the situation has alerted those in charge at Wrexham.

The 37-cap Wales international, with his experience in League One, perfectly fits the recruitment strategy of the Red Dragons. Moreover, being a free agent, finances won’t be an issue. However, having already played at League One, perhaps Joe Morrell might aim to play in the higher division. In that case, Wrexham is not short of midfield alternatives.

Midfield seems to be the priority for Wrexham

A noticeable trend is that most players linked with the Red Dragons have been midfielders. Firstly, there were reports that Wrexham wanted to sign Brighton star Marc Leonard. Last season, Leonard had dazzled for League One side Northampton Town. With 5 goals and 6 assists, he picked up the POTY award at the club. Unfortunately, the links have gone cold. Perhaps Leonard wants to fight for a place in the Brighton squad.

Another big name doing the rounds is Jamie Lindsay. The Scottish midfielder is a free agent after 5 years at Rotherham United. Previously, Ryan Reynolds and Co. wanted to break the club transfer record to sign the talented midfielder. At the time, Lindsay had injuries that might have put the Red Dragons off. But only a few midfielders are on the market better than the Scottish playmaker. Will the Red Dragons move in for him again? It is a transfer story worth watching.
