Thanks to their return to the EFL League One after 18 years, Wrexham has been seeing a busy transfer season lately. While Arthur Okonkwo remains the club’s only, yet dream signing this window, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are relentlessly searching for more star power. The Red Dragons are even ahead of heavyweight rivals such as Birmingham City in pursuing star midfielders and strikers. However, in a major transfer upset, Phil Parkinson’s plans to reunite Paul Mullin with his former Cambridge United strike partner might go awry.

Wrexham has been trying to poach Mullin’s ex-teammate Joe Ironside from the League Two side Doncaster Rovers. Reynolds and McElhenney even reportedly made a six-figure bid for Ironside. But, as per a report by Doncaster Free Press, Wrexham’s interest in Ironside is ‘wide of the mark,’ as compiled by The Wrexham Insider. The report also shuts the rumors of Wrexham offering Ironside a six-figure bid. The 30-year-old striker, notably, has three more years left in his contract with the Doncaster Rovers. Furthermore, Mullin’s ex-teammate joined the Rovers because the club was closer to his home.

Therefore, it would be highly unlikely for Joe Ironside to leave Doncaster to join Phil Parkinson’s project and reunite with Paul Mullin. Had Ironside and Mullin joined forces in the Racecourse Ground, Wrexham would have seen some firepower in their frontline. Mullin and Ironside combined for a staggering 48 goals for Cambridge United during the 2020-21 season. What is alarming about Wrexham’s transfer activity is that Joe Ironside is not the only player they have missed out on. The Red Dragons have lost other targets and are facing hurdles to sign others as well.

Wrexham had gotten close to signing Wigan Athletic defender Jason Kerr after word got out that the star would be out of contract this summer. However, in a surprise move, Wigan renewed Kerr’s contract for two years and permanently shut the door on Reynolds and McElhenney’s plans to lure him to Phil Parkinson’s camp. With Kerr out of the picture, Wrexham can still focus on improving their back-line, but not without any competition.

Rumors earlier linked Wrexham with Blackpool defender Marvin Ekpiteta, who is currently a free agent. However, now, rival club Hibernian has also entered the race to secure Ekpiteta’s signature. Besides, Rob McElhenney has interestingly tried again to lure former Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale to Wrexham. Bale notably turned his back on the Dragons last year and therefore Parkinson believes that deal won’t materialize.
