Is Wrexham making a mistake by letting their star striker go after signing George Dobson?

Wrexham AFC is expected to create a storm this summer transfer market. After nineteen years, the club is entering into the third tier of English Football, League One, and fans are demanding formidable signings from Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Their coach Phil Parkinson also appears to be on the same page claiming that they will not compromise on the quality to replace the 9 nine players they let go before. However, there could be another departure from the STōK Cae Ras, as an attacker is expected to exit after the arrival of experienced League One campaigner George Dobson.

Billy Waters could leave the club by the end of the current month, as per the latest reports. Soccer content reporter Thomas Boyle revealed on his X handle that Waters might move away by the end of July after gaining interest from many League Two and National League teams.

The move may surprise a few fans as most of the Wrexhams signings have been in the defensive end but they are letting off a striker. Nevertheless, the Red Dragons were not keen on giving Waters much time on the pitch. He played just seven games for the side, starting in just 3 games in the earlier part of the 2023-24 season. Subsequently, the Englishman was sent to Doncaster Rovers on loan after a poor run of form without goals.

The poor form continued for Waters as he struggled the whole season despite claiming Rovers to be the right club for him. Even though another year is left on his contract, reports suggest Wrexham is actively pursuing alternatives for the player. Nevertheless, signings seem to flow for the club amid a slow start.

Wrexham gaining momentum in the summer transfer market

Slow and steady seems to be the way for Wrexham instead of quick and clumsy. After a frustrating period of unsuccessful transfer attempts, they have made some impressive signings, with the latest signing being George Dobson. The former Charlton Athletic player joined Parkinson’s squad on a three-year deal after he became a free agent following the conclusion of the 2023-24 season.

Have an interesting take?

Dobson is just 26 but has played more than 260 League One games and he will add quality to Wrexham’s defensive midfield. The deal was possible after he had to terminate a pre-contract agreement with three-time Hungarian champions Fehervar.

Earlier, Wrexham confirmed the arrival of defender Lewis Brunt. The Red Dragons also acquired the services of one of their last year’s heroes Arthur Okonkwo from Arsenal on a permanent deal. This move might only be the beginning as the supporters are expecting a flurry of signings. It remains to be seen how many more stars Wrexham can bring in.
