Wrexham AFC’s story will reach the ears of generations to come. It has become a symbol of perseverance, as well as motivation for players to seek new opportunities. After its rapid rise to League One from the National League in two years under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, players are opening up about how the club has been influential in their careers. And this time it’s former Scottish international, Steven Fletcher, who shared his incredible testimony of how the club saved him from retirement.
Fletcher, after a career of 19 years, was knocking at the door of retirement but revealed how an opportunity at Wrexham changed his fortunes. In a recent season of Welcome to Wrexham, the striker stated, “In the back of my mind, I was thinking… is that me done? I was just half-thinking, ‘Do I just now concentrate on family, being a dad and a husband on a more day-to-day basis?“ But after a month of contemplation, “The wife got sick of me and she was like ‘no‘ you’ve still got something, your career’s not over,’“ revealed Fletcher.
He further said, “Even if you’re not a Wrexham fan, as a footballer, when you watch the kind of highs that they’ve had, you still get that little buzz watching it, and that’s all I needed – I just needed something inside me that was gonna be like ‘let’s go again’,” citing the turning point. Subsequently, with an injury to Paul Mullin, the 37-year-old was brought in as a backup, and the rest is history.

You can assume Steven Fletcher to be in the latter stages of his career, but his contribution to this season was appreciable for Wrexham. Playing 33 games, the former Marseille striker started in just ten fixtures. But Fletcher scored eight goals in the league, of which six proved to be match-deciding, including a hat trick against Barrow. But with Phil Parkison’s recent statement about a few players’ potential departure, Fletcher’s contract renewal was also under question.
Nevertheless, reports now suggest they will offer the forward a new contract heading to League One. Additionally, players Mark Howard and Aaron James would also get a chance to continue with the club. Overall, it looks likely Ryan Reynolds and his crew are rewarding players for their stunning feat this year. But whether they would replicate such heroics, only time would reveal.
