Dixie McNeil scored in the 66th minute for the Red Dragons. It seemed that the goal will be enough for them to advance to the fifth round. However, Chelsea notched an equalizer through Alan Mayes with four minutes remaining.

The Red Dragons drew against the Blues in the fourth round of the FA Cup in the 1981-82 season. The Welsh club visited the league rivals on January 23, 1982. Wrexham gave an impressive performance, holding the Londoners to a 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge with 17,226 fans in attendance. It resulted in a replay at Racecourse Ground, which also ended in a draw. Meanwhile, Chelsea won the second replay and booked their place in the fifth round.
