The dust seems to settle on Angel Di Maria’s rumored future at Inter Miami. The Argentine superstar has been one of the top players in soccer for the last decade or so and is now in the latter stages of his career. With his second spell at Benfica expected to end this season, there were recent talks about him moving to play alongside his compatriot Lionel Messi at Inter Miami this summer. Nevertheless, the Herons’ coach Tata Martino has now given his thoughts about the chances of such a tough move.
Speaking in a recent interview, the former Barcelona manager denied any talks of bringing Di Maria to Miami. Martino said, “No, we do not have anything that has officially arrived from the sporting director regarding Ángel (Di María) and neither regarding Chiquito (Romero),” dismissing rumors of even Boca Juniors keeper’s arrival.
The Argentine coach further continued saying, “Here the league has certain types of economic restrictions, certain limits, and it is clear that today we are complying well within that rule, but today it would not be feasible to hire any type of player, especially regarding the conditions that could come.” It seems like the regulations in the MLS could hold Inter Miami back even if they desired to get Di Maria in.

Clubs in MLS are fenced with tighter restrictions than European soccer for spending money on transfers. This year, the senior roster has a salary cap of $683,750 other than the three designated players. With all three DP slots filled, and the club spending on a player like Luis Suarez, singing Di Maria is a distant thought for Inter Miami. Additionally, Inter Miami had issues with their roster earlier resulting in the club being more vigilant, but not compromising on performance.
Inter Miami cracking MLS code despite a few struggles
Despite signing high-profile players, it wasn’t a bed of roses for David Beckham’s club. Inter Miami had to reportedly let go of players like Gregore, Jean Mota, and DeAndre Yedlin to meet roster compliance. However, with their prime players Messi and Suarez’s commendable contributions, the club is at the top of the MLS Easter Conference table. Moreover, the club’s captain was sidelined for a few games sustaining a hamstring injury making it even tougher for the Florida-based club.
Nevertheless, the club has a long way to go this season. Already building a star-studded squad, there is very little the club can invest more in. Therefore, keeping away from distraction, Martino is keen on bringing the unit together and winning their maiden MLS title.
