“In MLS, you have to do a little bit more.” is what a former La Liga player had to advise Lionel Messi. LACF skipper Carlos Vela, a month ago, expressed that it would take Messi a bit more effort than Europe. But, one month down the line, ahead of his match against Inter Miami on Sunday, the narrative has already changed. Without much surprise, the same Carlos Vela heaped praises on Messi.

Lionel Messi’s last month has been spectacular. His team Inter Miami did not face failure in any game he has played till now and when such things happen, opinions change. Carlos Vela wasn’t the only person to claim that things won’t get easy for Messi, even Wayne Rooney had a similar opinion.

Winning titles is everything

It is astonishing to see a person majorly contributing to win a trophy within his first 6 matches. In an interview with the press, Vela answered about Messi’s ability to make an impact irrespective of the place. He said, “I would be surprised if (Messi) played badly.”

It doesn’t matter where in the world you’re the best player, whichever league you go to, you’re going to be fine. When you’re the best, it doesn’t matter where you go,” the Mexican added. Because of Messi’s reputation, Vela feels the possibility of him failing is very low and surprising. Most of his statements did not look exaggerated too with the form Messi is in.

Vela also made a bold comment claiming Zlatan Ibrahimovic doesn’t fall under the same league as Messi. Even though Ibrahimovic scored many goals, it wasn’t enough to impress the former Mexican international.

Vela said that winning matters more than scoring goals. He said, “Zlatan did dominate, but he didn’t win anything. Messi in less time has won, they are not things that can be compared because they are different players, in different situations.” Although he was all praise for Leo, facing Messi is not a motivating thing for him.

As Vela’s Los Angeles FC takes on Inter Miami on Sunday, he isn’t excited or motivated to play against Messi. His main motivation is to play and contribute to the team in the best way and win. Carlos Vela is the record holder for most goals(34) in an MLS season. Apart from that, he won many awards including the MLS MVP in 2019, and also the recent MLS championship.

When the best in business are involved, opinions change. Leo Messi’s Inter Miami are about to face the reigning champions. Vela will be highly motivated to steal the limelight amidst Messi’s presence. On the other hand, Messi will want to come back on to the scorebooks.
