A distressing news has recently come to light regarding Wrexham AFC. Just hours ago, one of the Red Dragons’ star players boarded a plane, only to face an ordeal that turned the journey into one of the most terrifying situations. The flight carrying the prominent player from Ryan Reynolds’ cherished team had an oxygen shortage, causing several passengers to pass out.

The star involved in this incident is none other than Jacob Mendy. The defender had earlier taken an official leave from his domestic duties to represent his country, Gambia, at the impending African Cup of Nations (AFCON) that is being held in Ivory Coast. Mendy and his national teammates took off from Banjul to reach the tournament venue. However, due to a reported oxygen shortage on the chartered jet that was taking the entire Gambian squad to Abidjan, the team’s departure had to be delayed.

The players and members of the technical team suffered from severe headaches and breathing problems as a result of the plane’s operators running into technical difficulties nine minutes into takeoff. As per Kerr Fatou, one of the passengers said, “The airplane was too small, and some passengers started passing out due to lack of oxygen.” Additionally, another man added, “I don’t know how to explain this but Alhamdulillah we are all safe, but some are still in shock. It’s a cheap propeller airplane.”

As per the statement from the Gambian Football Federation reported by 13 Football, Air Côte d’Ivoire, the flight operating firm, is currently investigating the root cause. For now, the team has headed back to the Ocean Bay Hotel, where players and staff await further instructions. They also informed that every member is ‘safe and sound’ as they are finding ways to reach their destination ‘as quickly as possible.’ Indeed, this is quite a relieving update. Questions now surround how Wrexham are coping with the absence of their star player.

How are Ryan Reynolds and Co. faring in the absence of Jacob Mendy?

Ever since arriving from Boreham Wood last summer, Jacob Mendy has been the man in charge of Phil Parkinson’s side. The 27-year-old is in brilliant form this season, making 19 appearances and bagging 2 goals and 5 assists. He has also made two apps each for the FA Cup as well as the EFL Cup. Hence, his absence is a major blow for Wrexham.

Notably, the AFCON will run from January 12 to February 12. Gambia’s performance in the tournament, whether they qualify for the next stages or endure a premature exit, will be a crucial factor in Mendy’s return. Till then, Parkinson would need James McClean to fill the left-back void. Let’s see if he impresses in Mendy’s absence.
