Wrexham AFC has moved to a new era. The third-oldest club has been the talk of club soccer despite playing in lower tiers. And as they ended one of their best seasons, the club is already on a mission to secure a good future. However, the task is not going to be easy as the Red Dragons will need a major upgrade to keep up with the competition in League One. With co-owner Ryan Reynolds getting ready for the transfer market, coach Phil Parkinson opens up about a major change he would need to adapt to.
The English manager recently spoke about the inevitability of players moving on. According to reports, Parkinson said, “There’s the possibility of players moving on and that is the hard part of any manager’s job but we also know that we’ve got to evolve as a club and we’ll try and do that.” The club will have to face bigger teams and will need better-suited players for the third tier which Parkinson is aware of.
Meanwhile, a total of nine players will be done with their contracts this summer apart from the usual scrutiny, to make the appropriate transfers. However, the decisions don’t look easy with a few vital players on the list of departures. The club’s longest-serving player, Luke Young along with seniors such as Ben Tozer will be free agents in a couple of months.

Appreciating their contributions, Parkinson added, “But as I just said to the lads in the dressing room that one of the key elements to our success this season has been the dressing room and the lads out of the team. You know, Ben Tozer, who hasn’t played a lot recently, Luke Young hasn’t played, the professionalism has been outstanding, “ revealing their positive influence despite not playing. Additionally, goalkeepers Mark Howard, Rob Lainton, and Liam Hall along with three other defenders and a midfielder will need new deals to stay back.
Next season’s plans almost ready for Wrexham
On the other hand, Ryan Reynolds and crew are set to make the decisions about replacements. The coach revealed that a meeting has been scheduled with the owners and director Shaun Harvey to discuss the further roadmap. Wrexham is also eyeing Arsenal goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo who played a key role in their promotion this year. The 22-year-old’s one-year loan will also expire this season.
It’s not just the manager who will have to cope with the change. Players who have been part of such an incredible journey would want to continue playing in League One. The club was struggling to stay alive in the National League, but the stars stood by the club, a move Parkinson appreciated. Overall, the club has reached a point where it needs to make some bold decisions, and with so many memories and intricacies attached, the job will be a tough one for Parkinson.
