With Shaw injured, is it time for Alex Morgan to prove she's still the star of San Diego Wave?

It’s soccer that’ll take centerstage tonight. Not just the USA, but the entire sporting world is ready to bid adieu to one of the most prolific soccer players upon a ‘sooner than expected’ notice. Alex Morgan will never again lace her boots in professional soccer after the NWSL game against North Carolina Courage tonight. But as the tributes are expected to get people emotional and the chants echo her legacy, the question about Morgan’s playing in the game time remains.

The 35-year-old’s spell with the USWNT already seems to be done. However, with the latest updates about the young striker Jaedyn Shaw, the fraternity wants to have the privilege to see Morgan start for one last time.

Although Morgan had intended to retire after the season, the news of her pregnancy had to expedite her plan. However, the star’s recent issues did not allow her to play or start all the games. Moreover, Jaedyn Shaw’s return has struck apprehension among the fans about whether she would take the pitch from the beginning. But it appears that the star will make her way into the starting eleven, especially after Shaw is reported to have a thigh injury and could miss out.

Shaw hasn’t played since her gold medal spell for the USWNT and was expected to start if she would have been well. Meanwhile, Morgan was struggling for form recently, only recording one assist without a goal this season. After suffering an ankle injury in April, she was sidelined for a couple of months before making her way back. In addition, Morgan also stated, “Although it might only be a few minutes or limited minutes, I just want to take in every moment of the game on Sunday,” hinting at the little time she’d be spending on the pitch. All these factors, including her current medical status, led to the question.

Regardless of all these factors, new interim manager Landon Donavan hailed the club’s all-time top scorer. He felt that despite her recent disappointments, Alex Morgan remained professional and always positive to contribute towards goals. The way she helps in the attacking press and motivates her teammates will always be an asset to the team, making her a definite starter. And irrespective of Jaedyn Shaw’s place, Morgan was expected to compliment her in the attack in one last game. But it remains unknown for how long she’d play.

Supporters, on the other hand, would have preferred the USWNT teammates together. San Diego Wave is in danger of receiving the NWSL wooden spoon being placed #12 on the table and only a two-point advantage over the Houston Dash. Hence, Morgan’s experience and Shaw’s energy could help them with three points. Yet, the focus will turn back to the US women’s 4th highest goalscorer, and every moment will be cheered.
