San Diego has been noteworthy in the soccer world by NWSL club San Diego Wave FC and their USWNT superstar Alex Morgan. who plays for the franchise. It is an expansion team of NWSL that started playing in the 2022 season. It is also the first women’s soccer team in San Diego after they disbanded the San Diego Spirit in 2003. Wave plays at Snapdragon Stadium, with a capacity of 32,000.

However, now the city could get its unique stadium with a massive project announced. The news comes ahead of a potential MLS expansion club that the city could get this year. Las Vegas is also in contention for the 30th club that MLS will decide this year.

San Diego could get the largest stadium in the US

An investment group, Petra Development, has come forward with an enormous proposal that could change the sporting scene of San Diego. Petra Development proposed a unique soccer and entertainment complex in Chula Vista in San Diego. According to the group, it will be the largest soccer stadium in the US.

They value the ambitious project at around $2.5 billion. They are proposing an MLS stadium with a built-in hotel, an athletic training center, youth league practice fields, restaurants and shops, and much more. CEO and Managing Member of Petra Development Group, Frederick McDonald, told CBS 8 in a statement“It’s a dynamic, mixed-use project that will honor the rich cultural diversity of south bay.”

Despite saying it will be a stadium for the MLS franchise, Petra Development is ready to work with other soccer teams who will be interested in the project. Reports claim teams from the US and Mexico are already interested in the project. The group is considering the site of a former power plant near the Gaylor Pacific Resort Hotel and Convention Center.

Wave has got off to a brilliant start to the NWSL season. They are the only team with Portland Thorns with a 100% record so far this season. They sit second on the table on goal difference and would hope to continue the winning streak after the international break.

Alex Morgan is also in brilliant touch and has scored three goals in the two games. She scored from a spot against Chicago Red Stars in their opening game. Morgan scored a brace in the second game against North Carolina Courage to help Wave get two wins out of two.
