Eugene Melnyk, the owner of Senators, passed away in March last year. His family put the NHL franchise up for sale last November. The Deadpool star showed interest in buying the franchise. However, the high valuation meant the Canadian actor joining hands with the Ottawa-based real estate group Remington.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman met with Reynolds and Remington Group in December after their interest. Bettman welcomed the bid from Reynolds as he thought the popularity of the Canadian actor and his great job as an owner of Wrexham would help the Senators and NHL. However, as months passed, a few things changed.
The bidding attracted the likes of Snoop Dogg and The Weeknd (a famous Canadian singer). Reynolds and Remington Group asked for a 30-day negotiation window. The appeal was rejected, casting doubts on the bid. And ultimately, reports arrived that Reynolds and Remington Group won’t participate in the bidding process.
It came as a surprise for many. But it can be good news for the Deadpool star’s other investment, Wrexham AFC.
Is Wrexham AFC the winner after the Senators’ setback?
Since the takeover, Reynolds and McElhenney invested a substantial amount in signing players for the club. Reynolds also came up with a ten-year Premier League plan. After spending 15 years in the fifth tier, Wrexham will play in the fourth division of English soccer.
