The USMNT vs New Zealand is currently underway. Despite the match merely being a friendly, the hunger to win games can be witnessed among either side. In fact, the Star and Stripes tried to make a statement by taking an early lead in the game with the help of Ricardo Pepi’s strike, later to see it get ruled out. But on what grounds exactly was this decision taken by the official?
The incident transpired within the starting minutes of the first 45 minutes. After the PSV Eindhoven star somehow managed to find the back of the net with his right foot, the goal initially stood, with Mikey Varas and Co. celebrating their early lead. However, the Honduran referee seemed to have second thoughts about the goal and decided to have a word with his assistant. On a brief discussion, the ref eventually blew his whistle and signaled that the lead didn’t stand.
The reason why Ricardo Pepi’s strike was ruled out is because of a harsh foul that occurred during the build-up of the goal. Apparently, a New Zealand player got sandwiched between two USMNT players, which was deemed unnecessary blocking. At first glance, it may not seem like a major issue, but many would still consider it a gray area call.

However, had it been given in the USA’s favor, then it surely would have given them a great head start. It would be interesting to see if this controversial call would affect the score line towards the end of the match. Till then, Varas and Co. can carry forward their dominating display. Who knows they may find a replacement for their disallowed goal as the match foes further.
Notably, winning the game is quite necessary for the American boys. The previous fixture against Canada saw them endure a poor 1-2 defeat. Jesse Marsch’s side drew first blood and took the lead within 17 minutes, courtsey of Jacob Shaffelburg. Their lead doubled as Jonathan David also got his name on the scoresheet as substitute midfielder Lucas De La Torre’s goal minutes later only helped them deny their rival a clean sheet.
Hearing all such things must have been disappointing for the ardent fans. However, we have news that may bring a smile to your face!
