USMNT has been facing a few disappointing spells since last year. Despite showing promise, the team is unable to win crucial matches finally getting eliminated from the CONCACAF Gold Cup last year and a combined Copa America this time. Hence, one person’s place that is under threat is coach Gregg Berhalter, after being blamed for their consistent negative performances.
With the 2026 World Cup being hosted by the Stars and Stripes, supporters and fans are serious about the change in coach and even vouching for former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. Adding to it, an expert suggests why the German would be a good fit for the role.
Speaking on Alexi Lalas’ State of the Union Podcast, senior soccer commentator Rob Stone suggests US Soccer to go after coaches like Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola. Citing Klopp, he said, “Jurgen Klopp to me is very American you know, with that smile and everything, It’s it almost makes too much sense,” suggesting him to be best suited for the role due to his approach and attitude apart from being available currently.

Meanwhile, Stone feels that the Copa America should be the last spell of Berhalter’s role. USA lost 1-2 to Panama in the second game before being knocked out by tournament favorites Uruguay 0-1. Some of Berhalter’s tactics were criticized in the second game, but the team’s results are the cause for the outrage, keeping in mind the 2026 World Cup.

2026 World Cup can be used to attract Klopp to coach USMNT says Stone
Rob Stone also explained why Jurgen Klopp could land up with USMNT. Stone, posed a question, “What is it like to manage a host country in a World Cup? How many opportunities does that present itself” implying that an opportunity to manage hosts USMNT at one of the most prestigious sporting competitions could be the most exciting thing for Klopp. Additionally, he could experience the best of the land, hire its talent pool with authority, and have endless resources in just a 2-year-commitment, felt Stone.

Moreover, Klopp can land a lifetime deal if it goes well said the pundit. The USA is investing heavily in the sport. This is evident after the arrival of Lionel Messi and the deals he made with Apple apart from other benefits. And if it could benefit their team, why not? Earlier even Lalas stated that Klopp and Pep could take the opportunity to lead the team without much pressure, and will also have fans to back them.
