Erling Haaland had a night worth forgetting when Manchester City locked horns with Tottenham Hotspur. While City blew up their lead to settle for a draw, Haaland failed to find the net. Aggravating the misfire, the 23-year-old fumed at the match referee Simon Hooper and yelled ‘f**k off’ at the official for a controversial decision in dying minutes. Already in headlines for this wrong reason, Haaland now risks a penalty from the English Football Association (FA).

In addition to his on-field antics, Haaland took to X and questioned Simon Hopper’s decision with a post saying “wtf.” While Haaland’s on-field confrontation earned him a yellow card, his social media post might land him in further trouble with the FA.

Simon Hooper left Erling Haaland incensed after he denied Manchester City a chance to win the match. The official played advantage for City, only to call a foul when Jack Grealish came so close to scoring off of Haaland’s pass. The Norwegian posted a snippet of this controversial moment on X and captioned the tweet “wtf.” According to ESPN, Haaland now risks FA Sanction of his post, if it is deemed to break Rule E3.1, governing social media comments or remarks made in the media.

The English FA is yet to officially communicate whether it will charge Haaland for gestures or not. However, it is far from safe to say that the Manchester City talisman will come clean. The FA, in some of its recent rulings, has charged players and coaches who have displayed gestures similar to Erling Haaland.

FA’s recent charges against controversial comments

Earlier in September, the FA handed out a $126,000 penalty to Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk for his reaction to the referee after getting a red card. Similar to Haaland, the Liverpool ace also went ballistic at the official with NSFW rants. Haaland, however, is in danger due to his social media post, rather than his confrontation with Simon Hopper. Then again, social media rants also seldom go unpunished by the FA.

Last month, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta faced the FA’s charge for questioning refereeing decisions in a post-match interview. Arteta had then violated Rule E3.1, the same rule Haaland is now at risk of breaching. However, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has the 23-year-old’s back and is unhappy with Hopper’s refereeing. Anyhow, Haaland’s fit of rage against Hooper will continue to be the talk of the town in the soccer world, as quite a lot of Cityzens, like Haaland is waiting to know about the FA’s verdict.
