It’s official. FIFA has announced the three finalists for ‘The Best’ women’s player award and fans are not happy. USWNT star Alex Morgan is among the final three, along with England and Arsenal forward Beth Mead and Spain and Barcelona midfielder Alexia Putellas.

The initial shortlist of 14 contenders was analyzed by a panel of experts and now we are down to these final three soccer stars, who impressed the most in the previous season. The winner of the award will be announced in a ceremony on February 27.

Fans are not excited about Alex Morgan being in the final three

With FIFA’s announcement, fans are not too thrilled with the inclusion of Alex Morgan in the final three. Some fans downright questioned her being in the running for the top spot.

“Why is Alex Morgan there????” one frustrated fan questioned. While another fan couldn’t believe this and said, “This is a joke—Morgan??? There are better US players if the need is to always have a US player”.

“We all know Alex Morgan is not supposed to be there,” another fan said.

Many fans even believed that Australian forward, Sam Kerr, should have been in her place.

One American fan added, “I’m American and even I can admit Sam Kerr should be there over Alex Morgan. wtf?” While another fan gave his thoughts on who should have been in the place of Alex Morgan. “Alex Morgan in the top 3 is the biggest joke of t. Sam Kerr or Aitana Bonmati are more deserving to be honest,” the fan said.

One went on a full rant saying, “How are we going to take the women’s game seriously if this keep happening? No Sam Kerr on the list but the Morgan and Putellas who didn’t play for almost a year. It’s ridiculous at this point. The street and people knows who their GOAT is SK20”

It’s clear that fans are not happy with this decision from FIFA. They believe someone else more deserving should have been in the place of Alex Morgan.

Alex Morgan’s soccer accomplishments in 2022 were remarkable and undeniable. Domestically, she had a standout year with San Diego Wave FC as the team placed third in the NWSL standings and she also won the Golden Boot, having notched 15 goals in only 17 appearances.

On the international stage, Morgan played an integral role for USWNT during their CONCACAF Women’s Championship run, being named Player of the Tournament and co-top goal scorer. While some fans may disagree with her inclusion in FIFA’s ‘The Best’ award final three, these stats are impossible to ignore and make for an interesting discussion about her qualifications for that prestigious honor.
