Raphael Varane retires after one game—Is this the most shocking career move in recent soccer history?

Toni Kroos’ retirement shocked the soccer fraternity as the player announced his retirement at the end of the 2024 soccer season. And now, another former Galactico announced his retirement from professional soccer. Raphael Varane announced his retirement after playing just one game for his new Italian club, Como. The 31-year-old collected multiple trophies and accolades throughout his soccer career. Hence, the news comes off as surprising for a player who still had enough in his tank, one might say.

The player joined Como from Manchester United on a free transfer. Although his Real Madrid days saw astonishing success, his time at Manchester United did not replicate the same success. The defender’s injury troubles and mixed form only added to his lackluster United spell. Nevertheless, a new chapter awaited him at Como as he looked to make a mark in Italy. But his debut for Como didn’t go as planned. The player suffered from a knee injury against Sampdoria.

The center-back will stay with the club in a non-playing role as probably an advisor to manager Cesc Fàbregas. Varane detailed his thoughts on the retirement. “I hold myself to the highest standard, I want to go out strong, not just holding on to the game,” the Frenchman wrote on his Instagram handle. “It takes a big dose of courage to listen to your heart and your instinct.” Just like many players, he wanted to retire from the game while staying at the top.

The French player started his career with Lens from the youth team. Quick, tall, and an astute reader of the game, Varane formed an effective partnership with Sergio Ramos. He stabilized their defense, and the duo complimented each other. Spending 10 glittering years in the Spanish capital, he won 18 trophies – three La Liga titles and four Champions League, to name a few.

If Sergio Ramos was aggressive, and a stopper, Varane covered him well. He used his pace effectively to prevent his opponents from scoring goals. He mastered the art of clearing and interceptions and became an astute tackler in the game. His presence in soccer would certainly be missed.

But because of various injury troubles, it looks like the best decision for the French player to call it quits. And what a career he had!
