Just hours ago, Inter Miami unveiled Lionel Messi as their very own player. Undoubtedly, the World Cup winner and the MLS are embarking on a new and ambitious journey together. Considering his unique $55 million deal, the MLS Commissioner made a few eye-opening claims. He reveals that the ‘equity’ clause might not be offered to a player again after David Beckham and Messi.

But he was also quite open about the possibility of creating unique contracts. He said that the MLS would be open to doing that if Kylian Mbappe would join them one day!

Some weeks ago, Messi stunningly chose the MLS over Saudi Arabia and FC Barcelona. His current two-and-half-year deal with Inter Miami is worth $55 million per season. While the wage isn’t as high as the Saudi proposal, he has a unique contract. Along with his base wage, he will also get a commission from Apple (Season Pass) and Adidas.

He also has another clause similar to David Beckham’s player contract. After his retirement, he will be able to purchase a stake in an MLS club. Regarding the same unique clause, MLS commissioner Don Garber had a few words to say. He quoted, “You remember Beckham had an option on a team, something for an expansion team took ten years”.

“We’d never do that again…There was only one David Beckham, there’s only one Lionel Messi. But you know, who knows? Mbappe wants to come into the league and a team in our MLS wants to do something unique. MLS is ambitious and innovative and who knows what kind of structure we’ll come up with”. While Garber was quite open to unique contract structures, he also subtly made it clear that they would do it for the right person only.

Messi will need to get going as soon as possible. Just last month, the club parted ways with Phil Neville and welcomed Gerardo Martino as the head coach. The 60-year-old coached the soccer veteran earlier between 2013 and 2016. It is a new beginning for Messi and the MLS. The US Soccer Board will hope to attract more eyeballs toward American soccer before the 2026 World Cup will be hosted by America, Mexico, and Canada.
