This season, Emil Forsberg has set the MLS on fire. Through goals, assists, and sheer intensity, the Swedish midfielder is a major reason why NY Red Bulls are 2nd in the Eastern Conference. It is not wrong to say that swapping the Bundesliga for the MLS did wonders for Forsberg’s soccer career. But, the move to the United States came at a big personal cost for the former Leipzig star. It led to the collapse of his 19-year-old relationship with his ex-wife and former soccer player Shanga Forsberg.
As a matter of fact, it’s less than a month since Shanga reportedly filed for a divorce. But, why did things go downhill for the couple? And what is the backstory of Shanga? Let’s delve deeper.

Unlike many of the famous WAGs who follow the sport to support their partners, Shanga’s love for the game started way young. In fact, she was a professional soccer player who played for the German club FFV Leipzig. According to Emil Forsberg, Shanga had a keen eye for game details and labeled her his ‘harshest critic.‘ The MLS star told The Guardian, “When I come back from a game and she is really quiet I know that I have played really badly.”
The two tied the knot in 2016 and have two children together. Interestingly, Emil Forsberg rates Shanga as a ‘better footballer‘ than him. Unfortunately, a serious knee injury at 18 derailed her soccer career. Yet, that did not affect her equation with the former Leipzig man. Shanga said that she loves Emil ‘more than anything.‘ However, even her love reached its limits as the MLS star reportedly started neglecting the family.

It was on March 25th when Shanga uploaded a lengthy Instagram post. “We will part ways“, wrote Shanga and she proceeded to explain why. According to her, the move to New York Red Bull was a new start for Emil Forsberg. However, this resulted in Shanga and her two kids being neglected and being taken for granted. She added that Emil talked more often to the reporters than his own family.

Shanga explained, “Since you haven’t communicated at all, apart from insisting that you can’t explain your actions, let time tell what it was you wanted to achieve by ghosting your family.” She said that Emil Forsberg should show respect and consideration for others while displaying the maturity to communicate. She concluded with the line, “For your sake, I hope you don’t regret it and that your new life in NY is worth a divorce and the way you treated your children and their mother.”
While Emil Forsberg is currently having an impressive campaign, the abrupt end to his 19-year-old relationship must have taken a personal toll on him at all levels. The Red Bulls, captained by Forsberg, will return to their home ground to face Vancouver Whitecaps next in MLS on the 27th.
