When Liverpool won the 2019 UEFA Champions League final against Tottenham Hotspur, all the Reds’ stars were celebrating, shedding tears of joy. Yet, on the pitch, their star goalkeeper, Alisson Becker, could be seen on a video call. As an intrigued cameraman panned toward his phone, he was revealed to be chatting with none other than his beloved wife, Natalia Loewe, proudly showing off his first-ever UCL medal.

Becker’s inclusion of his wife and kids in this moment of triumph compels us to learn more about the very people who have supported the man who—within a year of his 2018 transfer to Merseyside from AS Roma for a then-record fee of €62.5m ($64m), making him the world’s most expensive goalkeeper for at least 21 days until Chelsea signed Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao for £71m ($90m)—had already cemented his place as a key figure in Liverpool’s success.

Natalia Loewe was born and brought up in Brazil, just like Alisson Becker. While her exact birthplace in Brazil is unknown, it is said that she also comes from Pelotas, the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul unlike the goalkeeper, who spent his childhood in Novo Hamburgo, a municipality in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. What is also known is that Loewe, 33, graduated as a doctor, specializing as a pediatrician from the Catholic University of Pelotas in her native Brazil.

Interestingly, Alisson met Natalia when she was still a student, while the goalkeeper had just begun his journey as a professional soccer player at Brazil’s SC Internacional. Loewe stayed in Brazil to complete her studies before joining the now 32-year-old player in Rome and later following him to Liverpool. It is to be noted that after years of dating, Alisson and Natalia finally tied the knot in 2015.

Of course, Becker feels proud to be with his beloved wife, as he once expressed her crucial role. “My wife Natalia left Brazil five months after graduating to be with me,” he once explained to Sportweek. “That meant a lot to me. I enjoyed supporting her while she was finishing her studies at university. I guess that made me a bit different to other footballers. And, if you don’t feel well, it’s better to be living with a doctor than a model.”
