Last year, 2023, marked a milestone in soccer, both in Asia and North America. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo‘s influence has brought the spotlight to the two nations with a spectacular revolution. And today marks the meeting of those leagues from Saudi Arabia and the USA, which are potential goldmines for soccer talents. However, in a recent revelation, today’s Inter Miami versus Al Hilal match will see female referees officiating.

Soccer is expanding the number of official female referees on the pitch in men’s games. Over the years, the sport saw a very slow expansion in inclusivity. But today’s game, even though considered friendly, will see a fierce battle and will be carefully observed by lady officials.

The Saudi Pro League broke the stereotype with mass movements of European players to its league. Now it is adding to the initial idea of including women referees in the men’s game. According to reports, a team of Brazilian female referees led by Edina Alves Batista will take charge of Inter Miami’s Saudi tour opener.

Batista was also one of the first female referees, along with Mariana de Almeida and Neuza Back, to officiate in a men’s club soccer game in the 2021 FIFA Club World Cup. Since then, the Brazilian has never looked back, gaining more such experience, especially after handling the 2023 Paulistao final.

Saudi Arabia, in its approach to going global, is adapting to the latest norms in soccer. The country will host the 2034 World Cup and is making the best possible efforts to build it up. Even the 2023 Club World Cup saw Tori Penso, the first full-time professional female referee in MLS, take charge of two games. And now Batista is set to grace the iconic match running to and from deciding the 8-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi’s game against Saudi Pro League giants.

Inter Miami will by no means take the pre-season as friendly as this year provides them with their best shot at the MLS title.
