Lionel Messi faced multiple obstacles in his career with the national team before he could lift the World Cup. There were times when, out of frustration, fans from his own country trolled him without thinking. In the latest Netflix documentary, his club teammate Sergio Busquets has shared how La Pulga had to take the blame for Argentina’s agony over the years.

The fans have all the right to call out their players for their lackluster performances. However, in the case of Argentinian and many others, the crowd resorted to drastic measures to put the players down for not having success. Lionel Messi, known as one of the finest players of all time, faced the full wrath of it.

A good deal of soccer stars have carried the hopes of their countries on their backs with brilliant performances. It leads to high expectations from the fans that their star player will play well in every match. Lionel Messi is one of them. Despite being 36 and the team having other stars, the fans have kept their hopes on La Pulga to help the team out of tricky situations. Former Spain captain Sergio Busquets, in the Netflix documentary, stated, “Argentina is a very passionate country. We all know the baggage he has to carry. When you don’t win, everyone may blame you.”

After losing the World Cup final in 2014 against Germany, the fans blamed Lionel Messi for skying high on a last-minute free-kick. Similar circumstances resurfaced in 2016 after La Albiceleste lost the Copa America final against Chile. The fans trolled La Pulga after he missed the penalty in the shootout. The intense slating also led to the Argentinian captain announcing retirement from international soccer. However, later that year, he reversed his decision for the love of his country.

The losses in the prominent tournaments for Argentina led to some soccer fanatics not taking them seriously. Many thought the same story of losing would continue for Messi and his team. However, La Pulga ensured his team did not suffer the same fate in Qatar.

Argentinian fans will look back at the FIFA 2022 World Cup with cheerful memories!

Many experts and fans predicted that Argentina would ride the old horse again, approaching the unique tournament. Yet, this time, there was optimism. Yet, with Argentina, everything is razzle dazzle! The fans saw their prediction come true as La Albiceleste lost their first group match against minnows Saudi Arabia.

But after that loss, Lionel Messi took it personally on him to win the trophy in Qatar. He scored seven goals and provided three assists as the team won the trophy with a win against France in the final.
