Uruguay, the first-ever nation to win the FIFA World Cup, later went oblivious to the global soccer scene. But in 2010, Uruguay had a different story to tell. A golden generation of Uruguayans dominated that year’s World Cup with a mix of wilderness and finesse. Nicknamed ‘El Pistolero’ for his ace goal-scoring shots, Luis Suarez was a key figure on the 2010 Uruguay side. Attracting the limelight since then, Suarez became his country’s all-time top goalscorer with 69 goals in 142 appearances.

17 years, four World Cup appearances, a Copa America title, and many other memories that El Pistolero could cherish, as he is hanging up his boots. The Inter Miami striker fought back tears while vowing he’ll play his farewell game with the same excitement as his Uruguay debut against Colombia in 2007. So, when will we see Suarez in sky-blue colors for one last time? Let’s find out.

Already a superstar in America, Luis Suarez won’t surely feature in the 2026 World Cup in the US. However, the Inter Miami star will return to the Uruguay camp before it laces up for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Suarez was absent in Uruguay’s last night’s draw against Guatemala. He was in the Inter Miami camp after scoring a brace in Miami’s 4-1 rout of Chicago in the MLS. Despite firing on all cylinders in the MLS, the former Liverpool and Barcelona star has decided to change the guard to the next generation.

Announcing his retirement earlier today, Luis Suarez confirmed that Uruguay’s upcoming World Cup qualifier match against Paraguay will be his last game for the international team. The game is played on Friday, September 06 in the Centenario Stadium, Montevideo, Uruguay at 7:30 PM ET.

Considering his current Inter Miami form, Suarez could light up the stage before a home crowd and have a grand farewell by taking Uruguay a step closer to their 2026 WC dream.

During his emotional retirement speech, Suarez stressed that his decision was well thought-out.

Suarez wants to play his last game in sheer calm and excitement

“I’ve been thinking about this and analyzing this. I believe this is the right time,” said Luis Suarez, referring to his retirement decision. Suarez has scored 16 goals for Inter Miami in a sensational run this season. But his chronic knee problem has been recurring, and he missed a few games apparently. Besides, the tempo in Uruguay’s national team can be quite challenging compared to any MLS club.

“I want to be relaxed when I play my last game with the national team. I’ll be just as excited to play as I was in 2007 when I played for my national team for the first time. That 19-year-old kid is now a veteran player, an older player – however, you want to call it – with an incredible history with the national team, that will give his life for the team,” said Suarez as he fought back tears.
