Is Cole Palmer's salute the best celebration we've seen in recent soccer history?

If you ever require an impact substitute, then might we suggest Cole Palmer? There’s a reason why he’s regarded as one of the most game-changing players as he did a big favor for England, having notched a crucial equalizer against Spain in the final of the Euros. However, what caught the eye of many was the ‘salute‘ celebration Palmer did to celebrate his heroics. This raises questions if there was any particular reason or message behind his celebration.

Even though the 22-year-old’s role has been limited to a bench player throughout the UEFA Euro 2024, the Chelsea superstar never fails to miss the mark when called upon. And so he did in the 73rd minute, equalizing on the 47th-minute strike of Nico Williams with a brilliant goal from outside the box. Interestingly, after scoring the goal, he went to the corner and made a salute while looking towards the crowd.

In fact, this might be the first time fans saw the youngster perform this celebration. But surprisingly enough, there’s no exact reason behind his gesture. What is known is that Palmer does have a unique celebration which he usually does after scoring; a shiver or a cold pose, rubbing his hands on his shoulders as if warding off the wintry chill. He did this celebration before hitting the salute.

The first time Palmer did the shivering celebration was after he scored a brace in a 3-2 win over Luton Town back in December. Surprisingly, when his celebration was discussed in the post-match interview, the attacker revealed there isn’t any specific reason why he does it. However, the former Sky Blue star revealed that he adopted the celebration from his ex-Man City teammate Morgan Rogers, who had used it after scoring in a match against Middlesbrough.

Following up with the interview, Palmer’s fellow Chelsea teammate Noni Madueke said, “That’s why they call him ‘Cold Palmer’ innit?” Hence, this is where Palmer got this nickname which ardent fans often use to address the Blues star. Remarkably, this brings up a question despite such quality, why he isn’t starting for England?

There’s no denying the quality that Cole Palmer possesses. His debut season with Chelsea is enough to testify to this claim. Yet, something saw the midfielder being benched with the attacking trio of Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka, and Jude Bellingham—who does operate in the hybrid role as well. Had Gareth Southgate decided to unleash the former Manchester City graduate from the beginning of the Euros then the scenes would have certainly been different.

Having come off the bench in the previous semifinal clash against the Netherlands, he provided an assist as well. Furthermore, keeping aside the opening two group-stage games, Palmer has been coming off the bench from the final Group C match and his performance has undoubtedly been brilliant. Even with a few minutes, he has been seen creating chances. Now here we are, heaping praise on the youngster for scoring a crucial goal in the finals of the UEFA Euro for his nation.
