The conclusion of the 2023 Women’s World Cup left the USWNT with a bitter taste. The team, dubbed to complete a three-peat, bowed down to Sweden in the Round of 16. Megan Rapinoe failed to convert a pivotal penalty kick for the US Women’s National Team, dashing their hopes of securing the World Cup trophy. Most people criticized her for smiling at the end, including a former president of the USA, Donald Trump. He launched a scathing attack on the soccer player amidst the prevailing history they shared.
Trump took to social media to let go of Rapinoe as, finally, the player opened up about those remarks in a recent interview. The soccer player has been critical of Trump in the past and has gone back and forth in recent times. Thus, Rapinoe replied to Trump’s instantaneous criticisms after the defeat.

In a recent interview with the Atlantic, Rapinoe found those criticisms to be ‘fake’ and discussed the subject. Defending the judgments dictated to her, Rapinoe stated, “It always is, because what he’s saying is fake. It’s a compilation of hit words and hot-button words that don’t actually make any sort of sense or square with reality at all … I think, just in general, the way that our team was spoken about over the course of the tournament, it was fake.” Rapinoe cleared up her thoughts on the issue, defending her side of the argument.
She continued, “And it didn’t make sense to me: In 2019, we were ultra-confident, ultra-swaggy—and won everything. And even though we won, we did it in bad taste, according to our critics. This time, we weren’t confident enough, and we don’t have the right “mentality.” And so we lost. It’s just so disingenuous. There’s no way for us to win, and there’s no way for us to lose.” It is safe to say the team lacked confidence in the entire tournament. They lacked the cutting edge that made them champions.
Despite the team comprising previous World Cup winners like Alex Morgan, the USWNT succumbed to a defeat against eventual semi-finalists Sweden. Thus, most fans took out on Rapinoe as she became the scapegoat for the missed penalty; and Trump joined the bandwagon.

Rapinoe had earlier called out her dad for voting to bring Trump into power. It forced Trump and Megan to have a rocky relationship at the start. But after the penalty miss, the entire scenario took center stage following Trump’s comments. Notably, in his judgments, the Rapinoe part caught the eye. He stated, “Nice shot Megan, the USA is going to Hell!!! MAGA.”
