For many, Alyssa Naeher is considered one of the greatest to ever protect the goal of the Stars and Stripes. With nearly a decade-long career and over 100 appearances, Naeher is set to play her final game against the Netherlands. Marking this special occasion, NFL legend Tom Brady, who also happens to be one of her idols, sent his well wishes, which was a fitting tribute to the goalkeeper who has done so much for the team.
With the USWNT, Alyssa Naeher was instrumental in her side’s 2019 World Cup win. She also added the Olympic Gold medal to her trophy cabinet, marking her final year for the national side in style. During the post-match interview following her side’s 0-0 draw, Tom Brady sent his congratulations to the 36-year-old Alyssa Naeher via a video message.
“Congratulations Alyssa on an incredible international career, what an honor it must have been to represent your country for as long as you did, but you did it so well, and I am so happy for you,” said Brady to Naeher who looked full of emotions. In her latest appearance, she earned her 10th shutout of 2024, the most she’s ever had in a single year for the Stars and Stripes.

Speaking of performances for her country, one of Alyssa Naeher’s most clutch moments came in the semifinal of the 2019 World Cup. In the 83rd minute, she saved Steph Houghton’s penalty kick, helping the United States secure a 2-1 victory over England. She also kept a clean sheet in the final against Netherlands, the side which she will be facing for her final game, once again.

In the 114 appearances that she’s made, the team has won 88 of them, and she has managed to keep 69 clean sheets, which means she didn’t concede a goal in roughly every 2 games that she’s played in, which is an insane stat for a goalkeeper. It will be a big side for the national side, especially for Emma Hayes, who will have a plethora of choices to pick from.
Who’s the best replacement for Alyssa Naeher?

Age has not been a factor for Naeher, who looks to be in her prime every time she wears the gloves. But like all good things that come to an end, it’s time for her to hand over the No. 1 spot to someone else. On paper right now, Casey Murphy looks to be next in line for Emma Hayes. At 28 years old, she has been the backup goalkeeper for some time now so it won’t be surprising if she gets the callup, after the International break.
Another interesting prospect is Manchester United goalkeeper, Phallon Tullis-Joyce, but the catch is, that she’s yet to earn an International cap. Another option is Mandy Haught who recently got her first cap for the side under Hayes. And then there’s also the injured Jane Campbell, who’s been part of the national team, longer than Naeher. Regardless of the pick, the next goalkeeper for the USWNT will have some big shoes to fill in, or should we say, gloves.
