The popular docuseries Sunderland Till I Die, based on the English club Sunderland AFC, inspired Rob McElhenney to pursue sports franchise ownership. Subsequently, he partnered with Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds to buy the previously oblivious Welsh club Wrexham AFC in 2020. Similar to Sunderland, the Wrexham owners, Reynolds and McElhenney decided to tell the club’s story to the world. They released a two-season docuseries titled Welcome to Wrexham in 2022, which won big at the Primetime Emmys. Now, the Producers Guild of America has honored McElhenney and Reynolds for the superhit docuseries.

Welcome to Wrexham‘s first season features the story behind the Hollywood takeover. The next season, released in 2023, covers the club’s historic promotion to EFL League Two after a 15-year absence.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney won the Producers Guild of America’s ‘Outstanding Producer of Non-fiction Television award today. McElhenney took to X to celebrate the joyous moment. “What an honor it continues to be to celebrate the people of Wrexham and tell this story. UP THE TOWN,” said Rob McElhenney in his tweet.

The next and the third part of Welcome to Wrexham will be released this April, after the end of the EFL League Two season. Wrexham now sits third in the EFL League Two table. This means the Ryan Reynolds co-owned side has a shot at yet another promotion to the next tier of English football. Then, Rob and Ryan could tell yet another on-field success story and find success off the field. Speaking of which, Welcome to Wrexham was the show stealer at the Primetime Emmys with awards in five different categories.

Welcome to Wrexham‘s surreal Emmy haul

In the 2023 Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, Welcome to Wrexham bagged the Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program Award. Its director Bryan Rowland took home the Outstanding Directing award at the Emmy night. Besides, the docuseries won Outstanding awards for cinematography, sound mixing, and editing as well. The show also earned a nomination for best sound editing at the Primetime Emmys.

Besides the Emmys, Welcome to Wrexham also won big at the Critics’ Choice Real TV Awards. It won the Best Sports Documentary Award in 2022. In 2023, it won the Best Sports Show award.
