With one week remaining in the NWSL regular season, most clubs have secured a spot in the playoffs, but there is still uncertainty for several teams. The US Women’s National Team is readying to face off against some of Europe’s biggest international champions. Defender Emily Fox speaks on how Emma Hayes’ tactics are putting them in position for victory. With Hayes in charge, the USWNT will enter a new age of tactical flexibility and adaptability that could counter what stout opponents such as England and the Netherlands bring to challenge them.
That strength from Hayes is exactly what Fox believes the U-20s need in order to face formidable European opponents with confidence. ‘We’re Not Afraid,’ she calmly asserted, highlighting the mindset with which this team has been built for the challenge ahead. The USWNT has been working on turning the screw under Hayes, making sure they have a tactical approach that is all about flexibility and precision against technically good opposition.
In a recent interview, Fox hinted at how important tactical flexibility will prove. “When we play Brazil, we’re not afraid to unlock that and show that, but I also think adding parts of the tactical components that she’s really good at—I think as a team we need that because, when we’re going up against England and Netherlands like we are in December, having that tactical flexibility and nuances will be so important for us.”

Fox also talked about the importance of this tactical switch, especially as it relates to preserving U.S. women’s dominance globally. “I think as a whole the women’s game is growing more tactically and teams are getting better and better and they’re getting more disciplined, so I just think with that, like to your point, we’re always going to have that in our locker in terms of the directness.,” she said.
Through Hayes’ eyes, Fox and her teammates anticipate executing this plan on the move, excited about proving they can handle top sides without rushing.

“There’s no doubt that the summer was brilliant, and we want to make these three games about celebrating some amazing accomplishments and players, but at the same time, we can’t rest on any laurels,” Hayes added. “Our focus is forward, our focus is on our process, and we want to keep chasing new heights. I love that we get to see most of our Olympic Team again after a few months, but I also love getting to work with some newer players and evaluate how they perform in our environment.”
At halftime in Nashville, the U.S. team will honor veteran defender Kelley O’Hara with a retirement ceremony. These are the final games the US will play on home soil. The team will play on November 30 at Wembley Stadium vs. England and on December 3 at Bingoal Stadium in the Hague versus the Netherlands.
