Following Al Etiffaq’s unexpected loss against fourth-placed Al Taawoun, Steven Gerrard pointed fingers at foreign officials. In the post-match press conference, he said, “Why are huge sums of money being paid to foreign referees in the Saudi League? Additionally, he slammed the referee’s wrong penalty decisions in the game. “We were penalised with an incorrect penalty, it was a natural contest. While the referee did not award us a penalty for a handball, so the series of not awarding penalty kicks for Ettifaq continues!!?”

Aschraf El Mahdioui’s goal from the spot in the 41st minute and Mateus Castro’s second-half goal helped Al Taawoun clinch crucial three points. Notably, this isn’t the first time Gerrard has taken a dig at referees. After losing the King’s Cup fixture against Al Nassr last month, the former Rangers coach claimed that his sidelost to the referee.” The 43-year-old was furious that his star player, Ali Hazazi was sent off, despite a “tactical professional foul.” Either way, it’s quite a bold claim from the Liverpool legend. Let’s hope these injustices don’t force him to resign. However, even if he does, the manager will have a new role in the Saudi League.
