It has been quite a memorable year for the USWNT. The ladies ended the year by winning the CONCACAF Champions Cup in July 2022. Since then, they have played many friendly matches, including the annual ‘SheBelieves Cup’. The continued success eventually resulted in a historic moment for women’s soccer in the country.

While some of their friendlies were vaguely won by the ladies, the September 6 match against Nigeria will always be remembered. Following an impressive win at Audi Field, Jill Ellis’ side celebrated for another reason as the representatives for the men’s and women’s U.S. national teams signed a new collective bargaining agreement.

US Senator hails historic moment for USWNT

It was indeed a historic moment in the history of the USWNT when they won their fight for equal pay. It has left a historic mark on the nation, as every year they celebrate ‘Equal Pay Day’ on March 14.

This year too, the USWNT celebrated the signing of the groundbreaking collective bargaining agreement by posting about it on Twitter. Congratulations were on order as they tweeted about the historic moment. In fact, Washington’s second female senator, Maria Cantwell, also gave heartwarming felicitations to the ladies.

“I was proud to stand with @USWNT to celebrate the signing of their historic collective bargaining agreement. We used the power of this moment to pass the Equal Pay for Team USA Act so that all Team USA athletes will have equal pay when representing the U.S. in global competition,” tweeted Maria.

The new agreement allowed women to get paid just like the men’s national team. It was in 2016 that USWNT players filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Since then, a lot of things have happened back and forth. Nevertheless, after facing several ups and downs, they finally won their fight for equality.

Cantwell full of praise for Morgan and Megan Rapinoe

While they were celebrating after the signature of all the parties, the senator also took her time to praise two special stars, Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe.

“I … want to thank heroes like Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan, who brought that case against U.S. Soccer… U.S. women’s soccer led the charge after winning the World Cup and making it clear to everyone that women athletes deserve equal pay.” said Cantwell during the ceremony.
